Deep RiverRock Queen’s 5k ‘Race Round the River’ the flagship 5k race in Northern Ireland

This year’s Deep RiverRock Queen’s 5k ‘Race Round the River’ will take place on Wednesday 3rd April 2019. The main event will kick off at 7.30pm with the 3k ‘warm up race’ starting at the earlier time of 6.50pm.

This prestigious race is recognised by Athletics NI as the NI and Ulster Championship 5k Race for 2019 and the organisers look forward to another fast and competitive race along the unique route around the River Lagan in Belfast.

Kevin Murray, Participation Sport Manager at Queen’s said, “This event is one of the largest participation events in the Queen’s Sporting calendar with over 1000 runners taking part from all over Northern Ireland and beyond.  It’s always a special event for everyone involved.  The 3k ‘warm up race’ also offers a shorter route for junior athletes and participants of all abilities to get involved in a special night along the River”

At the recent launch of this year’s race current Queen’s Sports Bursary Scholarship student Craig McMeechan commented “I finished in second place last year with a great time of 0.15.05 and I will be hoping to go one better this time around.  This race is great in that it provides great competition over a fast and flat route around the river whilst it also provides the Athletics Club at Queen’s with the opportunity to showcase athletics to the wider community of Belfast and beyond.”

Another Queen’s Sports Bursary Scholarship students Conall Kirk who also attended the recent launch is hoping to better his top 10 finish last year.  Conall has posted some impressive results lately most notably achieving the 800m standard for the European Indoor Championships while setting a new PB in the process.

John Mc Quade, for Queen’s Athletics Club added, “We encourage those interested in taking part to enrol early to avoid disappointment as we sold out last year.  Early enrolment will guarantee the specially branded Queen’s 5k T-shirt.  We are also encouraging students of all abilities to get involved and challenge themselves over the 3k or 5k course routes.”

Tara O’Rourke, Head of Brand Marketing for Deep RiverRock said, “I am delighted to announce our continued support for the ‘Race Round the River’ event, taking place at the beautiful Queen’s Sport Physical Education Centre. Deep RiverRock is a locally produced water brand, originating from the glacial hills of Co. Antrim, and is a perfect fit for this much-loved community event.

“We are passionate about encouraging communities to ‘Thirst for Better’ and want to reward those follow their pursuits and passions. We look forward to supporting all participants with fun and refreshment on the day.”
